For the article on the King of Caerleon, see Caerleon.

I hope that today will mark a new beginning for our kingdoms.
Arthur to Annis[src]

Caerleon is a powerful kingdom in the land of Albion. It is currently ruled by Queen Annis, who ascended the throne after King Caerleon was killed by Arthur Pendragon.

Caerleon was at war with the neighbouring kingdom of Camelot for many years. After Arthur made amends for King Caerleon's death, however, the two kingdoms made peace and have since become powerful allies.

History

The kingdom of Caerleon was said to be at peace with Camelot during the reign of King Caerleon's father. This truce was broken sometime after Caerleon ascended the throne (His Father's Son).

Gwaine's father was a knight in Caerleon's army. When he was killed in battle, Gwaine's mother went to the King for help, but was turned away, leaving her penniless (Gwaine).

After Caerleon's army was defeated by Camelot at the Battle of Denaria, King Caerleon retreated to the Castle of Fyrien. Uther tracked them down, however, and used a secret labyrinth of tunnels beneath the castle to plan an ambush (The Castle of Fyrien).

When Arthur introduced them to the court of Camelot, Aulfric and Sophia claimed that they were traveling west to start a new life in Caerleon (The Gates of Avalon).

Shortly after Uther's death, King Caerleon tried to take advantage of Arthur's inexperience by capturing villages along their border. He and his men were later captured when they trespassed into the heart of the kingdom, and Arthur executed Caerleon when he refused to sign a peace treaty surrendering their stolen territory.

Enraged by her husband's death, Annis sought revenge by declaring war on Camelot. The battle was called off, however, when Arthur proposed that they settle the matter with a duel between himself and a champion of her choosing instead. Arthur emerged victorious and Annis and her men left Camelot in peace (His Father's Son).

Three years later, Morgana's Saxons began raiding Caerleon's villages and taking their captives to her fortress in Ismere. Arthur and his men found the remains of one such village when they entered Caerleon in search of their missing knights. Later, while spending the night at Annis's castle, Arthur informed her of the discovery and they briefly discussed Morgana's recent activities (Arthur's Bane).

Trivia

  • According to Aulfric, Caerleon is located west of Camelot (The Gates of Avalon).
  • There is a town called Caerleon in the country of Wales. It is possible the same location that features in Arthurian legend.
  • Interestingly, Caerleon's soldiers dress like Celtic warriors, while most kingdoms soldiers dress like early medieval knights. This might be a reference to the real Caerleon being in Wales.
  • It is possible that the kingdom is unnamed and only referred to as "Caerleon's Kingdom," similar to how Cenred's Kingdom lacks a name.
