And it was Gaius, the Court Physician, who administered these treatments?
Aredian to Morgana[src]

Court Physicians are physicians employed to provide medical care to courtiers, the royal family, and other citizens of the kingdom. They also conduct scientific studies and investigations when needed.

Duties[]

Court Physicians are generally responsible for providing medical care to members of the royal court by treating injuries, diagnosing illnesses and ailments, and prescribing medicines and herbal remedies, many of which they prepare themselves. They may also examine the dead or conduct scientific tests to determine the source of an illness, or the cause of an injury or mysterious death (The Mark of Nimueh, A Remedy to Cure All Ills, The Gates of Avalon, The Lady of the Lake).

Among their most common patients are the kingdom's knights, who are frequently injured in training, battle, or while participating in tournaments. In times of war, a court physician may even accompany the knights to the battlefield (Valiant, A Herald of the New Age, The Diamond of the Day).

Court Physicians also extend their services to the common citizens when they are stricken with an illness or injury too severe to be dealt with on their own. For example, the village of Longstead requested Gaius' help when they were plagued with a mysterious sickness (Lamia).

  • It is possible that Julius Borden was trained as a physician, as he was once a student of Gaius'. However, it should be noted that he never demonstrated any medical knowledge (Aithusa).
