- “We are gathered here today to celebrate, by the ancient right of handfasting, the union of Uther Pendragon and Lady Catrina of Tregor.”
- — Geoffrey of Monmouth[src]
The Wedding of King Uther and Lady Catrina refers to the wedding of King Uther Pendragon and the female troll impersonating Lady Catrina of Tregor. They were married by the ancient right of handfasting.
Events
The wedding occurred after Catrina enchanted Uther with a love spell and persuaded him to propose to her. It took place in the throne room and was attended by most of the court of Camelot, including Prince Arthur, Lady Morgana, Gaius, and Guinevere. Merlin was trapped in the castle dungeons, where Catrina had imprisoned him the night before.
Uther and Catrina stood on the dais and declared their intention to be married. When no one objected to their union, the officiant, Geoffrey of Monmouth, used a garland to symbolically bind their hands and hearts for all eternity.
Meanwhile, Merlin managed to escape from the dungeons and ran to the stop the wedding. He was delayed by Catrina's servant Jonas, however, and arrived at the wedding just as Uther and Catrina completed their vows and Geoffrey pronounced them husband and wife (Beauty and the Beast).
Trivia
- This is the only successful wedding to be seen in the series. Arthur called off his weddings to both Elena and Mithian, and his wedding to Guinevere was canceled after she betrayed him with Lancelot (Beauty and the Beast, The Changeling, Lancelot du Lac, The Hunter's Heart).
- Arthur and Gwen were eventually married after the Second Fall of Camelot, but their wedding took place offscreen (The Sword in the Stone).
