The Skirmish in the Caves was a brief battle between Merlin, Agravaine, and Agravaine's Southron warriors. It occurred when Merlin confronted Agravaine after he and his men followed Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, Tristan, and Isolde into the tunnels outside Ealdor.
History[]
After Agravaine and his men attacked Ealdor, Merlin, Arthur, Guinevere, Tristan, and Isolde escaped into some nearby tunnels. Before entering the caves, Merlin used his Dragonlord powers to call the Great Dragon, who attacked their pursuers with his fiery breath.
Though most of the Southrons were killed by dragon fire, Agravaine and a handful of his men managed to find cover in the caves and continued their pursuit. When Merlin realized that they were still being followed, he sent Arthur and the others ahead while he doubled back to create a diversion.
Merlin tried to lead Agravaine and his men on a chase through the caves, but was soon cornered and forced to confront him directly. Agravaine demanded to know where Arthur was and tried to kill Merlin when he wouldn't answer, but Merlin cast a nonverbal stunning spell before they could attack him. The force of the spell killed all of the Southrons except Agravaine, who was momentarily stunned.
Aware now that Merlin had powerful magic, Agravaine tried to defeat him with trickery. He deduced that Merlin was Emrys and tried to distract him by talking about how Merlin had deceived Arthur. While speaking, Agravaine suddenly grabbed a knife and tried to attack Merlin, but Merlin quickly shoved him away with another stunning spell, killing him instantly (The Sword in the Stone).
