Eggs are hard-shelled reproductive bodies produced by certain species. They allow the offspring to develop independently until it can survive on its own, at which point the creature hatches.
History[]
When the High Priestess Nimueh created an Afanc out of clay, she enclosed it inside an egg bearing her mark and enchanted it with an animation spell. She then transported the egg to Camelot's water supply, where the Afanc hatched and poisoned the well.
The Afanc was later discovered by Gaius and Merlin, the former of whom also found a piece of the egg's shell and recognized its mark as Nimueh's (The Mark of Nimueh).
Four hundred years before Arthur's reign, Ashkanar hid a dragon egg in a tomb meant for himself and ensured its safety by dividing the Triskelion, the key to the tomb, into three pieces that he hid throughout Albion. When the dragons were all but eradicated during the Great Purge, it became the last dragon egg left in Albion.
When Arthur learned that Julius Borden had reassembled the Triskelion to steal the dragon egg, he led Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table on a quest to find and destroy it. Unbeknownst to Arthur, however, Merlin intended to rescue the egg and return it to Kilgharrah, the last surviving dragon. He succeeded in his mission and later used his Dragonlord powers to hatch the egg by naming the dragon within Aithusa (Aithusa).
Trivia[]
- Eggs can be produced by both magical and non-magical creatures. They can also be created artificially, such as when Nimueh used her magic to create the Afanc (The Mark of Nimueh).
